Retired Judge of the Family Court of Australia - Appeals Division
Steven Strauss was born in Germany. He came to Australia in 1940 and graduated from Melbourne University where he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1948 and of Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1949.
In 1950 he commenced practise as a Barrister at the Victorian Bar. In 1965 he was appointed one of Her Majesty's Counsel for the State of Victoria (Q.C.). At the bar, he had a wide and varied practice, which included matrimonial and family law.
He was appointed a Judge of the Family Court of Australia in July 1976. In 1983 he was appointed a temporary member of the Appeals Division of the Family Court and in 1985 he was appointed a permanent member of the Appeals Division.
His retirement from judicial office became effective in January 1994. In March 1996, Steven Strauss was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland and he then commenced practise as in-house Counsel and Consultant with Jones Mitchell.
